It can be very daunting to try something new, especially swimming as it is different from almost everything else we do in our lives.
Learning to swim, whatever age will give you confidence and huge health benefits
Learning to swim as an adult is not much different from learning as a child
Also see our page for women swimmers for loads of great advice and tips.
Just before we start, my strong recommendation is to find yourself a good adult swimming lesson, see our pages on swimming lessons to find out more and search for your nearest.
Right lets begin....
Here are some great tips to get started………
The most important thing is to build confidence, Use the shallow end of the pool and gradually lower yourself in. Use floats for support and just walk around close to the edge if you wish.
As your confidence grows try floating on your back with floats under your arms, and kick your legs. OR hold onto the side on your front and kick your legs.
Learning to stand from your front and back is a great skill to learn, have a look at the following for help.
Learning to stand
Learning to stand from Your front
Start by floating on your front
Press your arms downwards, palms facing the floor
Tilt your head back and bend your knees forward
As you become upright, push your feet down to stand. Use your arms to maintain balance
Stand fully on the pool floor
learning to stand from your Back
Start by floating on your Back
Press your arms downwards, and bring head forwards
NOW raise your knees towards your chest
As you become upright, scoop your arms and hands forward and upwards
Push your feet downward and stand up
Learning To Glide
On Your Front
Use a float either out in front of you, or under each arm
Push off from the wall or floor, raise both legs and stretch right out.
On Your Back
Use a float on your chest or under each arm
Again push of the wall or floor, raise both legs and stretch right out
As confidence grows, try removing the floats. This will give you more freedom
Give it a go, you can learn to swim whatever age and you will love it.
I highly recommend adult swimming lessons, I’ve been involved in a number and they are great. The difference in just three or four sessions is fab. I was recently talking to a friend who said taking adult swimming lessons was by far the best thing he had done for a very long time.
No more excuses, lets have a go……
Go and watch a few sessions at your local swimming pool and see what you think.
They will teach you all of the above,
They are great social events.
They are great exercise.
I hope this page has been of use to you; please contact us if you would like to add further tips for our readers. Thanks.
