A Step By Step Guide To Learning Butterfly

Let your arms enter the water, thumbs and fingers first, about shoulder apart. Your legs should start the first down beat

Once your arms are in the water they will start to move downwards with your elbows higher than the hands. Your legs should of now finished the first downwards kick.

Next the arms come backwards and inwards under the chest. The legs move back to the surface to begin the next kick.

Your arms now move FAST backwards and outwards, while your legs begin the second downwards kick.

Next your arms will come out the water around hip level lead by your elbows, The body position is high making this a good time to take an inwards breath. Your legs will have finished their second downward kick.

Your arms prepare to enter the water in front of you, elbows slightly bent. Your legs will have returned to the surface finishing your second kick.

Try to finish each arm stroke shoulder width apart, bringing your arms together only waists energy.
As your bring your arms over the top of the water keep your elbows high.
Butterfly kick comes from the whole body. Think of it like a wave that starts in the upper body and flows into the legs and finishes in the feet. Try not to kick just from the knees.
