Common Swimming Pool Problems

Here for you are some very simple tips and advice to help reduce the chances of problems with your pool.

Fixing the problemsDon’t worry. Owning a swimming pool was always going to be 99% FUN and 1% HEADACHE, but we are hear to reduce that small percentage even more.

So lets look at them one at a time…..

1) Listen Out For Unusual Noises.

In simplest terms, this could tell you that your Pump or Filter is on its way out or hopefully just in need of a little TLC. Have a look at our page on Choosing the right type of filter for further advice.

If you hear a noise all is not lost…

Often cleaning out your filter will do the trick, though investing in a really good pump and filter will in the long run be your best option.

2) Keep A Close Eye On Your Pumps Water Pressure Gauge

First and foremost ask yourself this, do you know what the pressure should be? If not, find out. If it climbs higher than the recommended figure, then it’s an indication of a possible blockage, or your pump giving up the ghost.

Basically higher the pressure, harder the pump is working.

Check your pump, and clean it out if necessary.

3) Keep Your Pools PH Level Below 8.0

If you can, try keeping the PH level of your pool between 7.0 and 7.6. This will ensure you have safe water in your pool for everyone.

4) Check Total Dissolved Solids Often

What are they? They are a combination of all the chemicals and debris in the pool. Ideally they should be checked around once a month to avoid damage to your filter.

Chemicals in your pool

Recommended levels are 1,000ppm to 2,000ppm. Use a testing kit to check your pool.

TIP

Washing your filter and cleaning the debris can avoid an increase in Total dissolved Solids. Please see What testing is needed on my pool?

5) Keep The Area You Store Your Chlorine in Clean.

Why? If you don’t you will get a calcium build up, which will effect the Chlorine's ability to mix in your pool. In the worst case it will lead to an unusable pool.

And Finally…..

5) Add Chlorine At Night Or Early Morning

This simple allows the chlorine time to mix into the water before the heat of the days sun has chance to hit your pool, reducing the loss of chlorine to evaporation..
